Dr. Washabaugh is a state expert in the diagnosis and treatment of both chronic pain and acute pain disorders. His main goal is to decrease pain and increase function. As an interventional pain physician, his first obligation is proper diagnosis by finding the patient's pain generator. Once the cause of the pain is satisfactorily determined, Dr. Washabaugh is able to use corrective measures such as percutaneous discectomy (DeKompressor or nucleoplasty) or percutaneous placement of bone cement (vertebroplasty). For discography proven painful discs he performs DiscTRODE or IDET. When corrective measures are not available,
Dr. Washabaugh will decrease the pain response using neuromodulation (dorsal column stimulator, intrathecal narcotic pumps, epidural infusion devices), nerve destruction/ablation (radiofrequency, cryoanalagesia) and therapeutic injections (steroids, local anesthetics, synvisc). As a medical director, Dr. Washabaugh understands the benefits of coordinated pain management and takes a multidisciplinary approach to the care of the patient.

While functioning as an interventional pain physician, his primary training in physical medicine and rehabilitation adds another facet to Michigan Pain Specialist’s multi-tiered approach to patient care. Dr. Freydl’s goal is to increase patients’ physical function by improving their strength, flexibility, and comfort through physical therapy. Through education, Dr. Freydl seeks to alleviate patient’s fear of movement and activity. He utilizes passive pain relieving modalities such as manual medicine, physical therapy, and interventional spine procedures to allow patients to participate in an exercise-based therapy program. His goal is to inspire patients to take an active role in their own care.
Dr. Freydl does several interventional procedures in the cervical and lumbar spine including epidural steroid injections, facet and sacroiliac injections, diagnostic nerve blocks, nerve ablation procedures, percutaneous epidural lysis of adhesions, and discography. His primary training as an osteopath and fellowship training in manual medicine affords him the ability provide a wide of array of manual treatments including muscle energy, counterstrain, high velocity/low amplitude, as well as direct and indirect myofascial release techniques.
Dr. Freydl is originally from Northville, Michigan. He is married with two children. He enjoys red wine, guitar, collecting antique stereos, and watching football.

Ross Halpern, Ph.D., L.P.
Training:
Bachelors of Science in Psychology from University of Michigan
Masters and PhD degrees in Clinical Psychology from the University of Detroit
Internships at The Detroit Psychiatric Institute, Oakland University Psychology Clinic and Windsor Western Hospital.
Dr. Halpern's education and training qualified him to treat a wide variety of patients of different age groups, diversified cultures and socio-economic backgrounds. His interest in chronic pain started when he worked on his PhD dissertation, which involved teaching people relaxation strategies. His research provided understanding that not only does relaxation training reduces anxiety, but also lowers blood pressure and helps patients cope with chronic pain. Dr. Halpern's experience includes working with patients in chronic pain at the rehabilitation hospital in Southfield Michigan. In 1997, he became an independent pain consultant for the Michigan Pain Institute at St. Joseph Mercy, Saline, Chelsea, McPherson and the University of Michigan Hospitals. Since that time he has evaluated and treated thousands of chronic pain patients suffering from numerous types of pain disorders. His approach to treating pain patients is a combination of relaxation therapy and talk therapy.
Many patients initially don't think that psychotherapy would be helpful. However, once the patient engages in talk therapy they report that either they experience a reduction in pain symptoms or they feel better able to handle their pain symptoms.
