Dr. Chatas was born and raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He earned a master's degree from the University of Michigan School of Public Health and a medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1987. He completed his residency in anesthesiology at the University of Michigan and became a board-certified anesthesiologist in 1991. 

Dr. Chatas has been a member of the Saint Joseph Mercy Hospital (SJMH) medical staff in Ann Arbor as an interventional pain specialist since 1991. Dr. Chatas has hospital privileges at ProMedica Bixby Hospital and in Chelsea.  

Dr. Chatas has a subspecialty certification in pain medicine through the American Board of Anesthesiologists. In 2007, Dr. Chatas achieved the highest certification possible in his field by becoming a fellow of the World Institute of Pain. He is also board certified by the American Board of Interventional Pain Physicians. In 2009, Dr. Chatas was recognized by his peers as one of Southeast Michigan's "Top Doctors" in his specialty of pain medicine.

Dr. Chatas has expertise in using and teaching advanced interventional pain treatments. These include percutaneous vertebroplasty (cementing of fractured backbones); spinal cord stimulation for back, leg, neck, or arm pain; management of Medtronic intrathecal (spinal) pumps; minimally invasive disc surgery for the neck, chest, and lower back; radiofrequency lesioning (nerve cauterization treatments) of spinal nerves for the treatment of arthritic conditions of the head, neck, and back; and Vertiflex and MILD for symptomatic lumbar stenosis.
